MADRID, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- A 46-year-old female employee of the Madrid Zoo had been taken to hospital with multiple injuries on Sunday after being attacked by a gorilla weighing around 200 kilograms, the zoo has confirmed.

The woman was attacked on Sunday morning after entering the cage of the gorilla named Malabo and surprising it when it was just about to eat breakfast.

The employee suffered injuries on the head and upper body as well as open fractures in both arms. She was taken out of the cage while Malabo was driven off. The gorilla was then shot with a tranquilizing dart.

The zoo explained that Malabo was brought up as a baby at the zoo and it is "much loved" by his carers, adding that it attacked the worker because it was "surprised."

Police are now investigating the incident as a work-related accident. Enditem
