MEXICO CITY, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Mexico should "not turn the page" on its steadily shrinking novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Tuesday.
"We have not finished confronting the pandemic," president said at his usual morning press conference, urging continued precautions and social distancing.
Mexican health authorities reported 733,717 people have tested positive for COVID-19 since the start of the outbreak seven months ago, and 76,603 patients have died from the disease.
The Health Ministry's deputy minister of Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo Lopez-Gatell, said cases of infection have steadily declined in the past eight weeks.
"In summary, 27 of the 32 states have seen a decline in the epidemic, some over the past two weeks and others over more than 14 weeks," said the official, who leads the government's efforts to combat the pandemic.
However, "the epidemic is not over," he said.
"We have a clear pattern of decline, we need to continue to be careful in emerging from lockdown," he added.
