JERUSALEM, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Israeli archaeologists have discovered a 2,700-year-old limestone-made weight in Jerusalem, the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) said Tuesday.

It was discovered beneath the ancient Wilson's Arch at the northern side of the Western Wall Plaza in the Old City of Jerusalem.

The weight corresponds to the known measurement unit of two shekels, as the known weight of a single shekel is 11.5 grams.

The weight is dome-shaped with a flat base and an incised Egyptian symbol on top, resembling the Greek letter gamma.

This represents the abbreviated unit "shekel," while two incised lines indicate the double mass of two shekels.

According to the archaeologists, the accuracy of the weight attests to advanced technological skills as well as the weight given to precise trade and commerce in ancient Jerusalem. Enditem
