CAIRO, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit condemned on Thursday resuming the establishment of new homes in settlements by the Israeli side, the AL said in a statement.

Aboul-Gheit opposed the approval of the Israeli government to build more than 2,000 new settlement units, saying that it "will destroy the two-state solution."

He added that the resumption of the settlement works contradicts the claims of the current Israeli government of seeking to promote peace and security in the region.

The chairman of the pan-Arab body has called on the international community to bear its responsibilities against the attempts of the Israeli side to build more settler homes.

Israel approved 2,166 new homes in settlements in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, for the first time since it halted its West Bank annexation plan. Enditem
