PARIS, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- France's Senate announced Friday that eight senators have tested positive for coronavirus.

"A screening campaign took place in the Senate this week. 125 Senators have been tested, eight tested positive. All contact cases have been notified," said the upper house of the French parliament in a press release.

Next week, a screening campaign will be relaunched among senators, officials and collaborators, it added.

Four collaborators or officials of the Senate also tested positive and one of the senators who caught the virus was hospitalized, reported BFM TV.

The Senate said it had already adopted sanitary measures for several weeks. Wearing a mask is compulsory, everywhere and systematically, strict respect for barrier gestures is requested and all conferences, events and external visits are canceled.

France is facing a coronavirus resurgence, with an average of daily new cases of around 20,000 in recent days. On Thursday, 30,621 people tested positive, bringing the cumulative total to 809,684 since the outbreak of the epidemic.

Starting from Friday midnight, curfews will be imposed in Paris and other eight major cities from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. to try to curb the spread of the epidemic. Enditem
