MONTEVIDEO, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Uruguay's unemployment rate rose to 10.8 percent in August, two-tenths of a percentage point higher than in the previous month, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) reported on Friday.

The unemployment figure for August was also higher than the 10.7 percent recorded in June, the highest since August 2006.

As of last week, 9.4 percent of the employed in the country reported that they were working from home, the lowest level since April, the INE reported.

Over the past three years, unemployment in Uruguay has shown a slow upward trend that has accelerated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Amid the pandemic, around 170,000 applications for unemployment insurance have been processed, according to Minister of Labor and Social Security Pablo Mieres.

With the virus under relative control, Uruguay began reopening the country at the end of April. Enditem
