Explosion outside police office in W. Afghanistan cuases casualties

FIROZ KOAH, Afghanistan, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Several people were either killed or wounded after a powerful explosion rocked outside a provincial police office in Firoz Koah, capital of Afghanistan's western Ghor province on Sunday, a local official confirmed.

"The nature of the blast is a suspected suicide car bombing. The blast sent a column of thick smoke into the sky and triggered panic," the official who declined to be named told Xinhua, adding the blast which occurred roughly at 11:15 a.m. (local time), also caused destruction.

"The buildings of provincial police department, and nearby provincial women affairs directorate as well as several nearby buildings and vehicles were damaged by the force of the blast," he said.

Security forces have cordoned off the area for precautionary measures.

"The number of victims is still being counted. So far, we have no more details, but we will try to get more information," the source added.

Further details about the incident are still forthcoming amid the absence of any official statement.
