HOUSTON, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Early voter turnout for the November 2020 U.S. general election in Texas' Harris County is on track to surpass the total 2016 turnout, Harris County Clerk Chris Hollins said in a release Tuesday.

According to the release, in the first week of early voting, nearly 720,000 Harris County voters have cast their ballot. The first four days of early voting saw record-breaking turnout, with over 100,000 votes cast each day.

"We made history in Harris County in the first week of Early Voting, with over 700,000 Harris County residents getting to the polls and making their voices heard," said Hollins.

"We've provided more voter access than ever before, from tripling the number of Early Voting locations to providing Drive-Thru Voting and 24-hour voting -- two firsts in Texas history," said the clerk.

Early voting in Texas started on Oct. 13 and will end on Oct. 30.

Total voter turnout in Harris County for the 2016 general election was 1,388,898, with 977,279 casting their votes during the early voting period. Enditem
