TOKYO, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Japan on Wednesday confirmed 612 new COVID-19 cases, up from 483 infections logged a day earlier, bringing the nation's cumulative total to 94,626, not including those related to a cruise ship quarantined near Tokyo earlier in the year.
Of the latest infections, the Tokyo Metropolitan government reported 150 new cases with the figure topping the 100-mark for the second successive day.
Tokyo, the hardest hit by the pneumonia-causing virus among all of Japan's 47 prefectures, has now seen its cumulative total of infections increase to 29,335.
Japan's western prefecture of Osaka, second hardest hit by the virus, meanwhile, reported 82 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing its total tally to 11,702 infections.
Tokyo's neighboring prefecture of Kanagawa, for its part, saw cases increase by 88 on Wednesday to total 8,099 infections.
The nationwide death toll stands at 1,700, according to the latest official figures released Wednesday evening. Enditem
