S. Korea's foreign currency transaction falls in Q3

SEOUL, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's foreign currency transactions fell in the third quarter as the local currency's ascent to the U.S. dollar reduced demand for foreign exchange derivates, central bank data showed Wednesday.

The daily average trading of foreign currencies amounted to 49.56 billion U.S. dollars in the July-September quarter, down 4.7 percent, or 2.46 billion dollars from the previous quarter, according to the Bank of Korea (BOK).

The daily average transaction of foreign exchange derivatives slumped 5.9 percent from the prior quarter to 29.83 billion dollars in the third quarter.

The daily trading of foreign currencies averaged 19.72 billion dollars in the third quarter, down 2.9 percent from three months earlier.

The won/dollar exchange rate averaged 1,188.0 won per dollar during the third quarter, down from 1,220.2 won in the previous quarter.

The foreign exchange trading by domestic banks fell 0.8 percent to 24.37 billion dollars in the cited quarter, while the transaction by local branches of foreign banks retreated 8.3 percent to 25.18 billion dollars. Enditem
