BLANTYRE, Malawi, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- Malawi has seen a significant improvement in terms of gender equality and women empowerment according to delegates at the Beijing+25 consultations meeting in Blantyre.

During the consultation meeting on Tuesday, Emma Kaliya, Director at Malawi Human Rights Resource Centre (MHRRC) said that Malawi has made a lot of progress in terms of changing many things relating to human rights and gender equality.

"For the past years, progress has been seen in terms of changing many things, for instance, reforming gender-related laws has happened in Malawi at a very high speed. Since 2006 we have seen the coming in of prevention of domestic violence act. Another thing in Malawi that we seem to do well is the multisectoral approach in dealing with issues," she said.

The consultation meeting gathered different women from different professions in Malawi to brainstorm critical issues in the implantation of Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action after 25 years since its adoption in Malawi.

For Maureen Mhango, a business entrepreneur based in Blantyre, the platform has helped her in her pursuit to enhance a successful business between Malawi and China.

According to her, travelling to China for business has been a success since 2019. She however attributed language as one of the main challenges she encountered during her first days in China.

Mhango is among many girls in Malawi who have been empowered economically through a process by local non-governmental organizations thriving to empower women under the Beijing Declaration Platform for Action implementation.

Meeting in Beijing is considered as one of the most comprehensive global policy framework for the rights of women dated in 1995 when the women came up with 12 inter-related areas where a need for urgent action was identified. Enditem
