Workers engage in woodcarving at the redwood furniture workshop established by Zhang Xiangrong, a provincial master of arts and crafts, in Dongyang, east China's Zhejiang Province, Oct. 20, 2020. Dongyang woodcarving, originated in Dongyang City of east China's Zhejiang Province, has a history of more than one thousand years since the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). It is one of the outstanding representatives of Chinese folk carving art. Based on plane relief, Dongyang woodcarving has formed its own distinct characteristics with rich layers and light lustre. It was listed in the first batch of the national intangible cultural heritage in 2006. From wooden figurines making in the very beginning to architectural decoration and modern furniture, under the efforts of generations of woodcarvers, Dongyang woodcarving has been evolving and innovating for over a thousand years, demonstrating its strong vitality. By the end of 2019, Dongyang has three masters of arts and crafts ranking at the Asia-Pacific regional level, over 50 ones at the national and provincial level, and more than 3,000 professionals engaging in woodcarving.
