BEIJING, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- As traffic jams continue to frustrate commuters the world over, Chinese companies are seeking new solutions by developing various electric vehicles.

In northeast China's Harbin City, a 19.2-km-long autonomous rail rapid transit (ART) line has been approved and construction is expected to commence at the end of this year, according to local authorities.

The new all-electric trains used for the trackless ART system will be provided by CRRC Zhuzhou Institute Co., Ltd., based in Zhuzhou City, central China's Hunan Province.

The ART system uses onboard sensors to run the trains on virtual rail tracks.

The cost of building an ART line is much lower than laying rails for trams, said Liu Junwei, a marketing manager at CRRC Zhuzhou Institute Co., Ltd.

The ART system has been used in Yibin, southwest China's Sichuan Province, and the company is also exploring the overseas market for its ART trains, according to Liu. Enditem
