XI'AN, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- Guangdong beat Shanghai 8-5 to win the water polo title at China's 2020 national men's water polo championships here on Saturday.

In the final, held at the Xi'an Olympic Sports Center in northwest China's Shaanxi province, Shanghai took the lead in the first quarter. The two teams tied in the following sessions with solid defense from both sides.

Powerhouses Guangdong suddenly intensified its attack to break the deadlock before the end of the third session, going 8-3 up and keeping the lead until the final whistle.

In the bronze medal event, Guangxi and Hunan drew 11-11 in regular time, before Guangxi prevailed 15-14 after a penalty shootout.

Hosts Shaanxi placed fifth after four straight defeats.

According to Li Meichunzi, director of water polo within the China Rugby Football Association, COVID-19 containment measures meant that all the events slated to take place across 2020 were rescheduled for the final quarter of the year, making it difficult for athletes to maintain their fitness.

"The men's national team does not need to prepare for the Tokyo Olympics, and all their focus is on preparation for the 2021 National Games," Li said, adding that many provinces are willing to set up water polo teams over the coming year.

The Xi'an Olympic Sports Center, which includes a stadium, a gymnasium and a natatorium, is China's first sports facility with access to 5G, according to the organizers.

The natatorium is set to hold swimming, diving and artistic swimming competitions during China's 14th National Games that will officially open on September 15 next year. Enditem
