MANAGUA, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Hurricane Eta pummelled the northeast coast of Nicaragua early Tuesday, bringing landfalls and causing rivers to overflow across the Central American country.
Passing close by the port of Puerto Cabezas, Eta has ripped up trees and roofs, causing flooding in the region, Guillermo Gonzalez, head of Nicaragua's disaster management agency, told a news conference.
Bringing with it wind speeds of up to 240 km per hour, Eta has been designated as a category-4 storm, the second-most severe level on the scale, and was described by the U.S. National Hurricane Center as "extremely dangerous."
In Eta's path are some of Nicaragua's poorest regions, where the many people who live in wooden homes are particularly vulnerable to such a powerful storm, according to media reports. Enditem
