Uganda sets Jan. 14 as polling date for 2021 presidential elections

KAMPALA, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Uganda's electoral body on Wednesday set January 14, 2021 as the polling date for the presidential elections.

Electoral Commission in a statement issued here said the 11 presidential candidates, who were nominated on Monday and Tuesday, will start campaigns on Nov. 19 until Jan. 12.

"The Electoral Commission urges all nominated candidates, their agents, supporters and the general public to carefully observe the guidelines that have been issued by the Electoral Commission for this campaign period," the statement said.

Justice Simon Byabakama, chairperson of the electoral body, on Tuesday urged the candidates to promote safe participation in the electoral process by abiding to the COVID-19 prevention measures.

"We should be reminded that these elections are being conducted in the COVID-19 environment and therefore it's paramount that we jointly work together to ensure the lives of the people of this country are safe guarded and secured from the spread of this virus," said Byabakama.

Among the 11 candidates include the incumbent president Yoweri Museveni who has been in power for over 30 years. Museveni's main contender is music pop star Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu. Enditem
