SAO PAULO, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- Twelve inmates broke out of a prison in southern Brazil on Tuesday after digging an escape tunnel, local authorities said.

Police immediately recaptured five of the inmates who took part in the prison break in Pato Branco, a town in Parana state, which borders Argentina, according to the Parana Militarized Police.

It was the Pato Branco Public Prison's second mass prison break via an underground tunnel in as many months, after 16 inmates escaped on Aug. 10.

Security cameras recorded the inmates climbing out of a tunnel at one of the facility's health centers.

"We believe they had some type of help, such as tools for excavating tunnels," Police Capt. Guido Benjamin said.

Authorities have issued an alert with the identities and images of the escapees. Enditem
