LA PAZ, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Bolivian President Luis Arce on Thursday swore in Wilfredo Chavez as the nation's new attorney general, calling on him to strengthen the "institutionality" of the post and defend the interests of the South American nation.

"Now is the time to recover our institutionality, to recover our Attorney General's Office, and put it back at the service of the Bolivian State," Arce said during the swearing in ceremony at government headquarters in the city of La Paz.

Arce announced the Ministry of Justice will work earnestly to overhaul the office.

Chavez thanked Arce for his trust and reaffirmed his commitment to defending the interests of the South American country.

The Attorney General's Office is an institution of public representation whose purpose is to promote, defend and protect the interests of the state, according to Bolivian law.

Last year, Chavez dedicated himself to the legal defense of former Bolivian President Evo Morales, who on Wednesday returned to his political stronghold in the province of Chapare, in the central department of Cochabamba, accompanied by his former vice president, Alvaro Garcia.

Chavez, a lawyer, politician and professor at the Higher University of San Andres, served as minister of government between 2011 and 2012.

He also served as deputy minister of Justice and Human Rights (2007-2009), of Government Coordination (2009-2011) and of Citizen Security (2018-2019). Enditem
