WINDHOEK, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Namibia will next year export 500 tons of asparagus to Europe, Agriculture Minister Calle Schlettwein said Monday.

According to Schlettwein, the asparagus is one of the green scheme projects that are doing well.

"It is a commendable initiative as it is diversifying production, adding value to the product and it has secured a good market in Europe. We hope it will plough back into the economy and eventually create job opportunities," he said.

Schlettwein said this year, Namibia exported 180 tons of asparagus to Europe.

The planting of the vegetable started in 2016 on a trial basis to see if it was compatible with Namibia climatic conditions.

The success of the trial led to large scale planting for export and training for small scale farmers who are part of the project. Enditem
