Former vice governor of Hebei stands trial for graft

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Li Qian, former vice governor of north China's Hebei Province, stood trial Tuesday at the First Intermediate People's Court of Beijing Municipality on charges of taking bribes.

Li is accused of taking advantage of his various former positions to provide help for relevant companies and individuals in real estate development and construction and project contracting, among others, from 2006 to 2013, according to the indictment.

In return, he illegally accepted huge sums of money and gifts worth over 50 million yuan (about 7.6 million U.S. dollars), it added.

During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence, which the defendant and his lawyers cross-examined. Both sides gave their own full accounts at the trial.

In his final statement, Li pleaded guilty and expressed remorse.

The trial was open to the public and was attended by legislators, political advisors, press and members of the public.

The sentence will be announced at a later date. Enditem
