SOFIA, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Bulgarian Health Ministry on Wednesday reported a record high of 4,828 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, taking the national tally to 106,598.

The previous daily record of 4,390 new cases was reported on Nov. 11.

Meanwhile, the country's COVID-19 death toll has reached 2,413 after 131 more patients died in the past 24 hours, the second-highest daily tally since the pandemic began.

The ministry also said that 5,463 patients are currently hospitalized, with 303 in intensive care, while the number of infected medical workers has reached 4,193.

It added that 1,219 people have recovered in the last 24 hours, raising the country's total recoveries to 31,536.

The figures also showed that 1,301 of the new cases were registered in the country's capital Sofia, bringing the city's tally to 34,949.

Unlike many other European countries, the Bulgarian government refuses to introduce a lockdown despite the increase in COVID-19 cases and deaths, especially in the last seven weeks. Enditem
