ISLAMABAD, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Traders launched a protest in Islamabad on Tuesday after the Pakistani capital witnessed one of its biggest gold heists, local media and police reported.

The traders started to protest against the slowness of local police in registering the case of about a 45-million-rupee (279,500-U.S. dollar) robbery which took place on Monday, local reports said.

The incident happened in the Super Market area around 1 km away from the high-security Red Zone which hosts the parliament and other important government offices.

Following the protest, police registered a case against unknown robbers and promised with the traders to trace the culprits soon.

The protestors reportedly gave a two-day deadline to the police to trace the robbers and recover the looted cash and gold, otherwise they would shut down the markets in the city in protest.

According to the case registered by the Kohsar Police Station, three armed robbers entered the shop and looted around 4,800 grams of gold and 4 million rupees in cash and fled away.

The inspector general of Islamabad police has reportedly suspended a police officer who was in charge of the area for weak security and laziness in registering the case.

An investigation has been initiated with the help of security cameras, but no arrest has been made yet. Enditem
