BEIJING, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations in China Gender Theme Group held a seminar Wednesday in Beijing, reviewing China's practices on gender-based violence response and concerted efforts in the context of COVID-19.

The seminar was organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) China, with support from non-governmental organization Beijing Equality, to commemorate the 21st International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which falls on Nov. 25 each year.

Beijing Equality gave a keynote speech on "China's Progress and Prospects in Response to Gender-based Violence" during the seminar, noting China's achievements in areas such as the legal framework, working mechanism and cultural concept.

It called for accelerated actions for the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal 5.2 -- Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls.

Violence against women and girls is one of the most prevalent violations of human rights, said Navchaa Suren, UNFPA China officer-in-charge and co-chair of the gender theme group, adding that the elimination of violence against women and girls is of high priority for the UN.

"Currently UNFPA works to prevent and respond to gender-based violence in over 130 countries both in development and humanitarian settings," she said. Enditem
