NEW DELHI, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- A 24-hour nationwide strike by 10 major trade unions against the government's alleged anti-worker policies went on in India on Thursday.
The strike was against the federal government's divestment plans of state-run public sector undertakings and the recently passed labor codes.
According to trade union leaders, the strike will see millions of workers off the work for a day.
The strike was reported from many states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Odisha, Punjab, Telangana, Goa and Maharashtra. The participants in the strike include members of state affiliate unions, industrial clusters, coal mines, factories, federations of railway and defence employees, industrial workers groups, farm groups and several government employees.
The protesting unions are demanding 200 days of work for every labor in a year at enhanced wages, withdrawal of anti-farmer and anti-worker labor codes, scrapping of the national pension system (NPS) and restoration of the earlier pension scheme.
Some bank unions have also joined the strike, thereby affecting the work in banks.
Trade unionists said 10 central trade unions with at least 200 million workers affiliated to them have joined the strike.
The striking unions include Indian National Trade Union Congress, All India Trade Union Congress, Hind Mazdoor Sabha, Centre of Indian Trade Unions and All India United Trade Union Centre among others. Enditem
