BRASILIA, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Guilherme Boulos, Brazilian Socialism and Liberty Party's candidate for mayor of Sao Paulo, tested positive for the novel coronavirus Friday, his campaign said.

The 38-year-old candidate appears asymptomatic but will "comply with the quarantine protocol for the necessary period," according to his campaign.

Upon this announcement, broadcaster TV Globo officially canceled Friday's debate between Boulos and his opponent, incumbent Mayor Bruno Covas running for Brazilian Social Democracy Party, citing the health issue.

The leftist politician will face Covas in Sunday's runoff to decide the city's next mayor.

Polls show Covas is ahead of Boulos by 47 percent to 40 percent, though the gap has been shrinking. Enditem
