SOFIA, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Bulgaria's COVID-19 death toll has risen to 4,035 after a record high of 221 new deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, the health ministry said Tuesday.

According to the ministry, the number of confirmed infections has reached 145,300, up 2,814 over the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, 1,971 people have recovered from the disease, raising the total recovery number to 50,565, the ministry said.

Currently, 6,783 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized with 457 in intensive care units, it added.

The numbers of confirmed COVID-19 infections and deaths in Bulgaria have more than doubled in the last three weeks. In a bid to stop the upward trend, the Balkan country last week tightened social restrictions until Dec. 21, and extended the nationwide epidemic emergency until Jan. 31, 2021. Enditem
