KIGALI, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Vladimir Bosnjak has stepped down as the head coach of the Rwandan men's national basketball team on Thursday, three days after the team concluded a disappointing first-phase qualifier of the 2021 African Basketball Championship (AfroBasket).

"Rwanda Basketball Federation officially announces the acceptance of the coach's resignation effective on this December 3, 2020, considering the poor performance of the Rwanda National Team in the last AfroBasket Qualifiers 1st window," said the statement released by the federation on Thursday.

The basketball federation has appointed Henri Mwinuka the acting head coach and Karim Nkusi as his assistant and has embarked on searching for Bosnjak's replacement, according to the statement.

The central African country has an automatic ticket to the 2021 AfroBasket finals due on August 24 to September 5, 2021, as the host nation. It lost all its first three games against Mali, Nigeria and South Sudan in the group D and is the bottom team in the group.

The remaining group matches will take place next February. Enditem
