BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

YANGON -- The number of COVID-19 cases in Myanmar has increased to 103,166 as of Wednesday, according to a release from the Ministry of Health and Sports.

A total of 1,427 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported in the country.

NICOSIA -- Cyprus' Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou on Wednesday announced that tougher coronavirus restrictions will come into effect as of Friday morning and until the end of December, following a spike in deaths and new COVID-19 cases.

Speaking at a press conference after an emergency meeting of the cabinet, Ioannou said that as of 6 a.m. on Friday, malls, restaurants, cafes and beverage businesses have to stay closed except for offering delivery and takeaway services.

TOKYO -- Japan reported 2,746 new daily COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, renewing a record number of daily infections since the onset of the outbreak, according to the latest figures from the health ministry and local authorities.

The latest rise in cases brought the nation's total cases to 169,381, not including those connected to the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined near Tokyo earlier in the year.

JAKARTA -- The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 6,058 within one day to 592,900, with the death toll adding by 171 to 18,171, the Health Ministry said on Wednesday.

According to the ministry, 3,948 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 487,445.

MOSCOW -- Russia registered 26,190 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking its total to 2,541,199, the country's COVID-19 response center said in a statement Wednesday.

Of the newly infected, 1,747 had to be hospitalized, said Sima Sadat Lari, the spokeswoman for Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education, at her daily briefing.

HONG KONG -- New COVID-19 cases continued to top 100 in Hong Kong on Wednesday, with stricter measures put in place to curb the virus spread.

Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection (CHP) reported 104 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, marking the fifth time for the figure to surpass 100 in the past 10 days, taking its total tally to 7,179.

TBILISI -- Georgia reported 4,734 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing its total to 174,383, its National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC) said.
