SANTIAGO, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- U.S. technology giant Microsoft announced Wednesday an investment in Chile, which is regarded as the company's most significant investment in its 28-year history in the country.

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera said the investment is part of "Transform Chile," a technology promotion plan that includes establishing the country's first network of Microsoft data processing centers and free training to provide more than 180,000 people with the digital skills needed to get quality jobs.

"This is good news, not only because of the economic and employment impact, but also because it means a huge contribution for Chile to catch up," Pinera told reporters at a ceremony at the government headquarters.

The presidency said in a statement that Microsoft, together with its local partners and customers using cloud computing, will generate about an estimated 11.3 billion U.S. dollars in new revenue, as well as an estimated 51,000 new jobs over the next four years. Enditem
