7 killed, 25 injured in bus-tanker crash in India

NEW DELHI, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people were killed and 25 others injured Wednesday as a passenger bus collided head-on with a gas tanker in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said.

The accident took place in Dhanari area of Sambhal district, about 374 km northwest of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh.

"Today Uttar Pradesh roadways bus collided head-on with a gas tanker on the Agra-Moradabad road resulting in the killing of seven persons and injuring 25 others," senior police officer Chakresh Mishra said. "Owing to the critical condition of some of the injured, the number of deaths could increase."

The injured people were immediately transferred to the nearest hospitals.

According to the police official, the intensity of the collision was such that the bus was badly mangled after colliding with the gas tanker, whose front portion too was completely damaged.

"The rescue work is underway and we are trying to keep people away from the gas tanker," Mishra said.

The crash between the two vehicles is preliminarily attributed to the dense fog in the area, and the police have launched an investigation. Enditem
