COVID-19 death toll surpasses 3,500 in Israel

JERUSALEM, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Israel's Ministry of Health reported 23 new COVID-19 death cases on Wednesday, bringing the total fatalities in the country to 3,512.

Meanwhile, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Israel reached 462,209, after 7,065 new cases were added.

The number of patients in serious condition rose from 828 to 887, out of 1,464 hospitalized patients.

The total recoveries rose to 397,896 after 5,617 new recovered cases were added. The active cases rose to 60,801.

Earlier in the day, the Israeli central bank said the upcoming nationwide coronavirus lockdown will cost about 6.5 billion new shekels (2.04 billion U.S. dollars).

The 14-day lockdown will start overnight between Thursday and Friday, with schools and most businesses closed.

The full lockdown will also inflict indirect costs such as business bankruptcies and increasing unemployment, the central bank noted. Enditem
