MADRID, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Wednesday night he was concerned about the violence at the U.S. Capitol where a congressional session was held to certify President-elect and Democrat Joe Biden's victory.

"I follow with concern the news that comes from the Capitol in Washington. I am confident in the strength of America's democracy," tweeted Sanchez, who added that he had faith the incoming President would help to restore the calm.

"The new presidency of @JoeBiden will overcome the stage of tension, uniting the American people," Sanchez wrote on Twitter in both Spanish and English.

Protesters supporting outgoing President Donald Trump, a Republican, broke into the U.S. Capitol and forced proceedings to count Electoral College votes cast in the 2020 presidential election to halt.

Lawmakers are reportedly being evacuated from the House and the Senate, as protesters forced their way into the building, which has been placed under a lockdown, and entered the chambers.

A woman is reportedly in critical condition after being shot in the chest on the Capitol grounds. Enditem
