RABAT, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Moroccan security seized 1 ton and 160 kg of cannabis and arrested one suspect for alleged links to drug trafficking network, Moroccan police said in a statement.

The operation occurred early Monday at the entrance of the western city of Kenitra, said the statement, adding that the banned substance was hidden in a plastic shipment coming on a truck from northern Morocco.

The driver of the truck, 47, was arrested as the investigation is being carried out to determine the trafficking routes of the seized drug.

Despite efforts to crack down on cannabis cultivation during the past decade, Morocco remains one of the world's largest producers of the narcotic plant, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.

Moroccan security services seized a total of 217 tons of cannabis in 2020, an increase of 37 tonnes compared to 2019, according to official statistics. Enditem
