BAGHDAD, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- The Iraqi Ministry of Planning on Tuesday said that Iraq's population reached 40.15 million in 2020, about half of them are men and the other half women.

The ministry spokesman Abdul-Zahara al-Hindawi said in a statement that "the number of Iraq's population was based on population estimates prepared by the ministry's Central Statistical Origination according to international statistical standards."

The total population is distributed by 50.5 percent for men and 49.5 percent for women, al-Hindawi said, adding that the annual population growth rate in the year was 2.6 percent.

As for the age groups, al-Hindawi pointed out that the working-age group between 15 and 64 constituted the highest percentage, reaching 56.5 percent of the total population, followed by the youth group under 15 years, which represented 40.4 percent, while the elderly group over 65 was the lowest among the other groups, at 3.1 percent of the total population.

The Ministry of Planning announced last year that the population of Iraq exceeded 39 million by the end of 2019, while the number of population in 2018 exceeded 38 million. Enditem
