GUANGZHOU, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Super League side Guangzhou FC denied the rumors of a possible contract extension with head coach Fabio Cannavaro, a source of the club told Xinhua on Wednesday.

The former Italian skipper started his second stint at Guangzhou in 2017, and struck a five-year deal with the Chinese Super League powerhouses.

The 47-year-old led Guangzhou FC to the top flight championship in 2019, the first major title in his coaching career, but lost the two-legged final of the league last November.

Cannavaro's current contract is due to expire in 2022, Guangzhou have reportedly handed a two-year extension to the Italian with a wage cut.

"From what I have been told, for now we have no intention to pen a new deal," the insider said.

The 2006 World Cup winner have arrived in China in mid-January and is going through obligatory quarantine before being able to join the winter training of Guangzhou. Enditem
