BEIJING, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese government spokesperson Wednesday urged the U.S. government to prudently and properly handle Taiwan-related issues.

Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, made the remarks in response to a query about a recent statement relating to Taiwan issued by the U.S. State Department.

The Taiwan question concerns China's core interests and the Chinese people's national sentiments, and is the most important and sensitive core issue in China-U.S. relations, said Zhu, urging the U.S. side to adhere to the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques.

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authority in Taiwan has been colluding with external forces and making provocative moves to seek "Taiwan independence" over the past years, Zhu said. "That is the root cause of the current complex and severe cross-Strait relations."

The DPP authority should adhere to the 1992 Consensus and stop such provocations, which is the only way to improve the cross-Strait relations and achieve peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, Zhu added.
