ULAN BATOR, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Newly appointed Mongolian Prime Minister Luvsannamsrai Oyun-Erdene on Friday formed his cabinet, keeping half of the ministers who served under his predecessor Ukhnaa Khurelsukh.

The Mongolian cabinet is made up of 16 ministers in addition to Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene.

In the new lineup, former mayor of the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator Sainbuyan Amarsaikhan was appointed as deputy prime minister.

The new cabinet is expected to tackle challenges of keeping jobs, recovering the economy and carrying out health and educational reforms amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The cabinet was formed after former Prime Minister Khurelsukh resigned and dissolved his entire government at his own request last week, with two ministers having tendered their resignation amid social pressure and public protests.

Mass protests were triggered in Ulan Bator last Wednesday after TV footage showed a COVID-19 patient who had just given birth being transferred from a maternity hospital to a quarantine facility wearing only hospital pajamas and plastic slippers in the freezing weather together with her baby.
