10 dead and hundreds homeless in S. Africa following heavy rains

PRETORIA, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- A total of 10 South Africans have died in Mpumalanga Province as a result of heavy rains which have been falling in the country for over a week, said the South African local government.

Heavy rains following tropical storm Eloise have been pounding the country, destroying homes, bridges and government buildings.

Mpumalanga Province Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane said in a statement on Thursday that a total of 10 people have died in the province.

"As the provincial government, we are saddened by the passing of our people through this natural disaster. We appeal to people of Mpumalanga to continue to practice caution and vigilance when traveling on our roads," she said.

The provincial government also confirmed houses were destroyed and traffic was affected with trees falling on the roads. They have provided temporary shelter and relief material such as tarpaulins, mattresses and food parcels across the province. Enditem
