SHANGHAI, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Suburban areas of Shanghai saw a huge number of visitors during the first three days of the Spring Festival, also known as the Chinese Lunar New Year, authorities said Saturday.

The average occupancy rate of hotels in the city's suburban areas including Jinshan, Songjiang, Qingpu, Fengxian and Chongming stood at 57 percent from Feb. 11 to 13, up 27 percentage points from the same period in 2019, according to the city's culture and tourism administration.

Traditional cultural activities were most popular among visitors and locals. Ancient towns in the city's suburban areas jointly held celebrations showcasing the lantern culture, an intangible cultural heritage, in the Yangtze River Delta.

The city received a total of about 2.27 million visitors in the first three days of the holiday, which started on Feb. 11.

Shanghai has stepped up cultural and tourism activities during the holiday, with museums, art galleries, theaters, libraries and public cultural centers welcoming locals and visitors. A total of 130 famed tourist attractions are also open to public during the holiday.

Shanghai strengthened safety and health checks at public venues ahead of and during the holiday, said the administration. Enditem
