COVID-19 cases triple among Canada's health care workers since summer

OTTAWA, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- The number of COVID-19 cases among health care workers in Canada has tripled since last summer, according to the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) on Thursday.

A total of 44,078 COVID-19 cases among Canada's health care workers were confirmed from July 23, 2020 to Jan. 15, 2021, bringing the total number to 65,920 since the pandemic began in the country last February.

COVID-19 cases among health care workers continue to rise but it was slower than infections among the general population, the CIHI said.

The number of COVID cases among health care workers made up 9.5 percent of the country's total cases from August 2020 to January 2021, down from 19.4 percent from the start of the pandemic to July 2020.

All provinces saw an increase in COVID-19 cases in health care workers, with Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia experiencing larger percentage increases compared with the other provinces and territories.

As of Thursday afternoon, Canada reported a cumulative total of 857,212 COVID-19 cases and 21,846 deaths, according to CTV.

Currently, there are 30,393 active cases across the country. The latest national-level data show a seven-day average of 2,992 new cases daily on Feb. 18-24, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada on Thursday.

As of Feb. 24, the agency said, a total of 895 variants of concern have been reported across Canada, including over 854 B.1.1.7 variants, 40 B.1.351 variants and 1 P.1 variant. Enditem
