BEIJING, March 6 (Xinhua) -- A draft decision on improving the electoral system of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) was submitted Friday to the fourth annual session of the 13th National People's Congress of China for deliberation.
The move is significant for closing the loopholes in Hong Kong's electoral system, implementing the fundamental principle of "patriots administering Hong Kong" and ensuring Hong Kong's long-term prosperity and stability, experts have said.
It is a universally acknowledged fact that "political leadership should only be vested in those who hold the interests of the country at heart," said Cavince Adhere, an international relations expert in Kenya.
The situation in Hong Kong was "exacerbated by anti-China forces," said Sudheendra Kulkarni, former chairman of Mumbai-based think-tank Observer Research Foundation.
The whole world has witnessed how some Western forces incite violence in Hong Kong, and the improvement of the electoral system of the HKSAR "should be seen in this context," said Kulkarni.
Some countries attempt to "make use of Hong Kong affairs to create problems for China," said Ali Sarwar Naqvi, executive director of the Islamabad-based Center for International Strategic Studies in Pakistan.
"Ensuring the principle of 'patriots administering Hong Kong' is a right and very important approach taken by China," which will lead to Hong Kong's progress and facilitate the long-term and smooth implementation of "one country, two systems," said the expert.
Jean Emmanuel Pondi, a professor of international relations at the International Relations Institute of Cameroon, said only by improving HKSAR's electoral system and implementing "patriots administering Hong Kong" can Hong Kong enjoy peace and security. Enditem
