Wu Guixiang (L) and her son Zhang Hao are seen at the autism training center she set up in Hedong District, north China's Tianjin, March 30, 2021. In 1998, Zhang Hao was diagnosed with autism at the age of two. Ever since the diagnosis, Zhang's mother Wu Guixiang has spent all her time looking after her son. In order to help Zhang Hao and eight others with autism improve their social engagement after they had become grown-ups, Wu set up an autism training center in 2016, providing them with courses on life, social and vocational skills. Within five years, Zhang Hao learned how to read, write, cook, travel, go shopping, and even bake desserts. "If one day we have to say goodbye to our kids, we hope to see that they have their own friends, choose how they live, have enough support from others, and lead a life that is safe and happy," Wu says.
