TEHRAN, April 11 (Xinhua) -- The Iranian Health Ministry on Sunday reported 21,063 new COVID-19 cases, taking the country's total infections to 2,070,141.

The pandemic has so far claimed 64,490 lives in Iran, up by 258 in the past 24 hours, said Sima Sadat Lari, spokeswoman for the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, during her daily briefing.

A total of 1,710,974 people have recovered from the disease or been discharged from hospitals across the country, while 4,392 remain in intensive care units, she noted.

The spokeswoman added that 13,673,466 tests have so far been carried out across the country.

The infection and hospitalization cases continue in a steep upward slope, she said, adding that all provinces are facing serious increase in inpatients numbers.

The spokeswoman warned about the lower rate of compliance with the health protocols, urging people for wearing masks in public and keeping social distancing.

The Iranian authorities on Saturday enforced a 10-day restriction throughout the country to curb the recent resurgence of coronavirus cases and deaths.

Iran reported initial cases of the disease in February 2020. Enditem
