BUENOS AIRES, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Argentina reported on Tuesday 576 more COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours, for a total of 75,056 deaths, the Ministry of Health said, adding that there were also 24,601 new cases reported, to a total of 3,586,736.

The government decreed a lockdown that began on May 22 and will last until Sunday, in an effort to curb an exponential increase in the number of infections.

The measure involves mobility restrictions in most parts of the South American country including the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area, an urban conglomerate which includes the federal capital and 40 contiguous municipalities.

Currently, all social, economic, educational, religious and sports activities are suspended, and only essential businesses are authorized to operate.

Argentina has administered more than 11.3 million doses of vaccines against COVID-19 since Dec. 29, 2020, when its inoculation campaign began. Enditem
