MANILA, May 28 (Xinhua) -- The Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved on Friday a loan package of 19 million U.S. dollars for Mongolia to purchase vaccines against COVID-19.

The Manila-based bank said the project is part of ADB's Asia Pacific Vaccine Access Facility (APVAX) launched in December 2020 to offer rapid and equitable vaccine-related support to ADB's developing members.

ADB President Masatsugu Asakawa said the project under APVAX "will provide the government of Mongolia with immediate and flexible financing to vaccinate priority populations, especially those at highest risk from infection, to reduce the impacts of the disease and help put the country on a path to sustained recovery."

"These include individuals at high risk of death from COVID-19 infection and about 200,000 frontline workers. In addition, people with disabilities, those who suffer from chronic diseases, and vulnerable groups requiring social assistance will benefit from the vaccine rollout," the ADB added.

Mongolia has reported 55,852 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Friday, including 277 deaths. Enditem
