HERAT, Afghanistan, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Unidentified armed men gunned down a top religious scholar in Afghanistan's western Herat city on Thursday, head of Hajj and Religious affairs of Herat province Abdul Khaleq Haqqani confirmed.
According to the official, the unknown armed men opened fire on Mawlawi Mohammad Kababyiani, the deputy of the religious council in the western region of the country Thursday morning, killing him on the spot.
The late Kababyiani was a moderate religious scholar and had often condemned the ongoing war and militancy in Afghanistan. Enditem
