MOSCOW, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Like the Soviet Union, the United States is demonstrating an overly-confident assessment of its resources and capabilities amid a range of internal and external challenges, said Russia's Vzglyad newspaper in an article on Saturday.

Citing Russian President Vladimir Putin's recent comments on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, the article said that as an empire becomes overconfident, it begins to make mistakes that ultimately lead to its collapse.

Putin said the threats emanating from the United States are made "under the influence of internal political processes" and under the assumption that the country's economic, military and political power will be strong enough to overcome them.

The United States faces critical challenges such as the weakening of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, within which it assumes a superior role, undermining the independence of France and Germany, the article quoted Boris Mezhuev, Associate Professor at Moscow State University, as saying.

A growing number of social, economic and political problems within America are also exposing societal disparities, Mezhuev added. Enditem
