KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Five people have been killed and 18 others injured as a passenger bus ran over a mine in the restive Miwand district of Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province on Tuesday night, provincial police spokesman Jamal Barikzai said Wednesday.
"A mine planted by militants on a road in Miwand district struck a passenger bus late Tuesday night, killing five commuters including women and children and injuring 18 others," Barikzai told Xinhua.
The official said investigations are underway.
Miwand district has been the scene of fierce fighting between government forces and Taliban militants over the past couple of weeks. Enditem
