SYDNEY, July 1 (Xinhua) -- The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has announced the 15-strong softball team for Tokyo Olympic Games as the sport makes its return for the first Games since Beijing 2008.

The team will compete in the first event of the entire Games against Japan to open the Tokyo 2020 Olympic competition.

Dual Olympic medallist Stacey Porter will captain the team, with the 39-year-old being the only team member to have competed at an Olympics.

Training and competing in Japan since June, the squad was the first overseas team to arrive in the country ahead of the Games.

Australia men's water polo team for Tokyo was also announced by the AOC, seeing Rhys Howden and Richie Campbell both equal the Australian Olympic water polo record of making their fourth Olympic team.

Aidan Roach, Joel Dennerley and Aaron Younger will return for their third Games, and George Ford makes his second team while seven players make their Olympic debut.

The team has been drawn in the same group with three of the top four finishers from Rio 2016 in Serbia, Croatia and Montenegro, as well as 2019 World Championship silver medallists Spain, and Kazakhstan.

The selection brought the number of athletes in the Australian Olympic Team to 370 out of an expected 450-480. Enditem
