PHNOM PENH, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian authorities have arrested three local men and a Thai national with 40 kg of crystal methamphetamine in central Kampong Thom province, the National Police reported on its website on Wednesday.

The suspects were arrested on Monday afternoon along National Road 6 in Santuk district when they were transporting the drugs from neighboring Thailand to Cambodia.

"Forty packages of drugs weighing 40 kilograms and two cars were seized from the suspects during the raid," Kampong Thom provincial police chief Major General Ouk Kosal was quoted as saying by the National Police.

Deputy national police chief General Mok Chito said police had investigated the case for more than a month before making the arrests.

Cambodia has no death sentence for illicit drug traffickers. Under its law, someone found guilty of trafficking more than 80 grams of illicit drug could be jailed for life.

According to the anti-drug department, Cambodia nabbed 15,144 drug suspects, including 324 foreigners in 12 nationalities, during the first nine months of 2019, seizing over 405 kg of illicit drugs.
